On Thursday night at Nova Place, the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) held its Design Pittsburgh Awards gala to honor projects throughout the region that exemplify excellence in various areas of design. The awards have been championing innovative designs from local architects for decades.
While all the winning firms and designers are based in Western Pennsylvania, their projects have gone up all over the country.
The night’s highest honor, the Silver Award, went to the Hidden Path Residence by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Their Hidden Path Residence in Long Island was cited for optimizing “views of the water while maintaining privacy, creating sizable outdoor living spaces that respect the close proximity of neighbors and creating a clear sense of separation between the public and private spaces of the house despite the compact footprint.”
The People’s Choice Award went to the Century Inn bed and breakfast southeast of Washington, Pa. The inn was first opened in 1778, and over many decades of continuous operation had been visited by national heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette and Abraham Lincoln.
However, a fire in 2015 significantly damaged the inn, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Working with Margittai Architects and local craftsmen, the owners were able to restore the inn to its days of colonial grandeur.
Closer to Pittsburgh, Chartiers Valley Middle School received an Honor Award for their open floor-plans designed by IKM that emphasize communal and collaborative learning styles.
The awards included a side competition for young architects. Here is the full list of the winners:

The REACH cart is deployed to Carnegie Library locations throughout the greater Pittsburgh region to facilitate computer literacy courses targeting low-income and elderly residents.
