Get to know some of the top practitioners of contemporary printmaking at a new group exhibition opening this Friday night at Artists Image Resource (AIR).

Wet Leaves, Ricardo Vicente Jose Ruiz

The artist-run organization, based in the heart of Pittsburgh’s historic Deutschtown, is hosting a free opening reception for its latest exhibition, PRINTWORK 2015. Featuring a selection of innovative and diverse print-based work created by contemporary artists from throughout the United States, the new showcase is part of AIR’s annual, national juried exhibit series.

Juror for this year’s edition of PRINTWORK was Dan Byers, senior curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, formerly of the Carnegie Museum of Art.

The 21 artists featured in PRINTWORK hail from across the country—including San Francisco, Portland, Lexington, Philadelphia and New York City. Artworks on view range from intaglio prints (etchings and mezzotints), relief prints (woodcuts and linoleum cuts) and screenprints, to mixed media, collage and digital works.

All prints in the show will be available for sale, with prices ranging from $250 to $1,000, including special “buy-it-now” pricing for select works from AIR’s archives.

Also opening on Friday night at AIR is a solo exhibition by Ricardo Vicente Jose Ruiz. Winner of AIR’s 2014 Director’s Award, Ruiz is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited both internationally and has been featured in numerous publications. Ruiz, who is currently pursuing an MFA in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University, creates compelling works that explore culture, contemporary society, superstition, symbolism and oral history.

Friday’s opening reception for PRINTWORK 2015 is free and open to the public from 7 to 9 p.m. AIR’s galleries are also open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. and by appointment.

A grassroots organization, AIR focuses on the presentation and production of fine art print work, offers a variety of educational programs and provides print and imaging services to artists and educators.
