January 19
8—11 p.m.

Those in need of a vitamin D infusion, and a night of basking in the healing powers of sunlight, won’t want to miss Carnegie Museum of Art’s next Third Thursday event.

Join artist Penelope Umbrico, who will lead a unique, hands-on drawing activity using live-streamed sunsets from all around the world as inspiration, and explore why so many Earthlings have been drawn to and inspired by this awesome star throughout the ages.

Take a tour of Umbrico’s vivid series, Sunset Portraits from 31,271,160 Sunset Pictures on Flickr on 08/03/16, and see outstanding works in the museum’s current photography exhibition, Strength in Numbers. On view through February 6th, Strength in Numbers features 100 photographs dating from the late 1800s to present that explore themes of people, place and perspective. Drawing on the collections of all four Carnegie Museums, the show features compelling photographic series created by artists such as Eugène Atget, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Mike Kelly, Sharon Lockhart, and Andy Warhol.

Sun seekers will also be treated to live performances by local singer-songwriters Morgan Erina, Devyn Styles, Brad Yoder, and Nathan Zoob. Each musician will debut new songs inspired by the CMOA’s social media initiative, #cmoarealday, which invites the public to contribute images documenting their daily lives.

Shake off the winter blues—quite literally—as you dance the night away to beat tunes spun by DJ Pete Butta. Be sure to check out the museum’s world-renowned permanent collections and newly revamped late-night café menu.

During its monthly Third Thursday series, CMOA swings open its doors to the 18+ crowd for an evening of personalized fun with rotating partners, themes and events spanning the institution’s grounds.
