A little slice of Havana is about to take the stage in East Liberty.

A rich cultural exchange with Cuba is reflected in exciting new winter programming hosted by the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. Pittsburghers will be among the first audiences to see two world premieres performed by Havana’s own Malpaso Dance Company. The group’s appearance at the theater marks thePittsburgh debut for a company working on the forefront of Cuban contemporary dance.

The acclaimed troupe will present of Despedida (Farewell), a work choreographed by Malpaso co-founder Osnel Delgado that features an original score by Grammy-award winning musician Arturo O’Farrill. The second untitled work to be featured was created by the prolific American choreographer Trey McIntyre and commissioned by two leading performing arts institutions—NYC’s Joyce Theater and Jacob’s Pillow, located in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts.

The Kelly Strayhorn’s collaborative programming with Malpaso Dance Company also includes pre-show mixers, post-show discussions, master classes and student matinees. One highlight not to miss is an all-ages community dance class and lunch hour with Conflict Kitchen taking place on Wednesday, February 25th at The Alloy Studios.

Jennifer has worked at the Mattress Factory, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Dahesh Museum of Art and is co-author of Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania. She also is co-coordinator of Handmade Arcade. Musically, she is in a band called The Garment District and is a founding member of Brooklyn's The Ladybug Transistor.
