Sure, we all love movies in the park but now you can take in cinema under the stars—and on an urban rooftop—at the Pittsburgh party with the best views in town. Dubbed the Downtown Rooftop Shindig, the series continues its latest pairing of cult favorite films, Pittsburgh bands and locally crafted food and drink when it returns on Wednesday, June 15. Admission is free.

Setting up shop with the skyline as its backdrop on the top level of downtown’s Theater Square Garage, the Shindig features specialty cocktails, craft brews and fresh fare from Burgh Bites, Meat & Potatoes, and the Big Y group, as well as summery amenities like colorful beach chairs, café tables and comfy inflatable furniture.

Party likes it’s 1988, with a special screening of the romantic musical comedy film, Hairspray, written and directed by pop culture icon, John Waters. With an all-star cast that includes Ricki Lake, Debbie Harry, Mink Stole and Jerry Stiller, the unforgettable flick is set in Baltimore in 1962, and follows the self-proclaimed “pleasantly plump” teen Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and rallies against racial segregation.

It’s only appropriate that a film with a fabulous soundtrack that includes songs by Chubby Checker, Lesley Gore and Gene Chandler would be paired with live music.

Bringing their high-voltage hybrid of beats, brass and electronic dance music to the scenic rooftop will be Pittsburgh’s own Beauty Slap. Joining them for a live set under the stars will be local, dream-pop indie rockers, Heaf.
