Due to the chance of rain on September 9th, the Shindig is postponed to Thursday, September 10th at 6 p.m.
You’ve heard of movies in park but what about movies up on a roof? Help the Pittsburgh party with the best view in town celebrate the end of summer on Thursday, September 10th.
Dubbed the Downtown Rooftop Shindig, the series wraps up its summer season with a screening of the 2001 cult classic Zoolander paired with live music by Balloon Ride Fantasy. Setting up shop within the top level of downtown’s Theater Square Garage located at 667 Penn Avenue, the free shindig also features specialty cocktails, craft brews, homemade fare and colorful summery amenities such as beach chairs, café tables and inflatable furniture.
Directed by Ben Stiller—who stars alongside Owen Wilson, Zoolander features cameo appearances by everyone from Donald Trump, David Bowie, Victoria Beckham and Cuba Gooding, Jr., to Tommy Hilfiger, Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Donatella Versace. Zoolander chronicles a sweet but shallow male model named Derek Zoolander who is played by Stiller (his name is a mashup of Dutch model Mark Vanderloo and American model Johnny Zander). Our likable protagonist finds himself a pawn in the hands of corrupt fashion executives—all with the hidden intent to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The film also weaves elements from a pair of short films that were written by Stiller along with the late stand-up comedian and Emmy-nominated television writer Drake Sather—and directed by Russell Bates—for the 1996 and 1997 VH1 Fashion Awards. Zoolander‘s New Wave soundtrack features music by Wham!, Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock No Doubt, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and others.
Providing the Shindig’s other-wordly soundtrack will be Pittsburgh-based synth-pop band Balloon Ride Fantasy, which features Chris Olszewski (vocals and guitar), Bethany Berkstresser (vocals), Phil Conley (guitar), Jordan Wood (keyboards), Brad Schneider (bass) and Brian Ganch (drums).
Attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs or purchase one during the event. Open to all ages, the Shindig kicks off at 6 p.m., followed by music at 7 p.m and the movie at sundown. More information is available on the event’s Facebook page.
