Hollywood Theater in Dormont
Elvis has definitely not left the building according to The Hollywood Theater. This Sunday, January 8, devotees of the music icon will flock to the historic South Hills movie house to celebrate what would have been Elvis Aaron Presley’s 82nd birthday.
There will be a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on at this birthday bash. Celebrate all things the King with tasty peanut butter and banana sandwiches and festive birthday cake. Come dressed in your best Tupelo tornado threads (think: guitar-slinging Army sergeant, rockabilly bad boy or 1970s lounge crooner), and practice that swagger as you pose for a keepsake photo with a live Elvis.
The event will feature a special screening of the 1970 concert film, Elvis: That’s The Way It Is. Directed by Denis Sanders, the documentary chronicles the Elvis Summer Festival which took place at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in August of 1970. The fascinating footage follows Elvis’ triumphant return to performing live on stage after a decade-long hiatus. Elvis’ series of concerts in 1969 and 1970 broke box office records and reestablished his status as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Documenting the history-making event, Sanders’ feature-length concert film features devoted fans who traveled from all around the globe to attend, and “crosses the footlights, revealing the legendary singer as a man preparing for an emotional career comeback.”
During the electrifying concert, Elvis performs many of his beloved songs, such as “Love Me Tender,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and many others.
