October 16 – 31
Since opening in May, Spirit has become a Lawrenceville nightlife staple for many reasons. Some flock there for the fresh Slice Island pizza—served in square-shaped slices with creative toppings combinations—and stay late for the Salty Jag and Laura Palmer cocktails, cozy dive bar ambiance (minus the smoke) and super chill back patio. Others still head to its 51st Street HQ for any number of live music acts and themed events on two floors. If you have yet to join the devoted, there are 16 days in October to experience Spirit’s spookier side.
Turning the former Moose Lodge into a Halloween-themed destination, Spirit’s first annual Psychedelic Monster Maze runs from Friday, October 16th through Saturday, October 31st.
The centerpiece to the haunted happenings will be the multi-sensory Labyrinth created by Pittsburgh-based artist Ian Brill. Inside this highly immersive and brightly hued light installation, visitors will experience a heightened state of awareness and an altered sense of depth perception.
Adding to the aura will be additional visual oddities crafted by Tom Brown, Kara ZuZu and Kyle Anthony Adams of The Locomotive Explosive collective.
Spirit’s inaugural Psychedelic Monster Maze will also play host to a number of musical acts over 16 days. The mind-bending mayhem kicks off on October 16th with jazz chanteuse Phat Man Dee, who will perform with masters of the macabre, David Apocalypse, Andrew the Impaled and Fangs the Clown of the Stranger Dangerous Slideshow group. Additional performers include DJ Jarrett Tebbets, Pandemic, Zombo and The Rockin’ Bones, Amoeba Kineval, Total Trash and Weird Paul.
The fright fest culminates on October 30th and 31st with two nights dubbed The Lost Lodge Danse Macabre. Night one is hosted by Lazercrunk’s featured artist Sam Binga of famed Bristol, UK-based Critical Music. Bringing his Brit bass music to the Spirit turntables, Binga will be joined by local sound-makers Tracksploitation, Hank D, Cutups, Ninja Papes. Also performing seasonally apropos tunes will be Silencio, who showcase the eerie music of director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti.
Halloween night itself will feature underground house and techno legend Joe Bickle—from L.A.’s Animal Club—along with music by Aaron Clark, DJ Keebs, Cruces, Wreck League, Secret Priest, Minus, Ephen, Eric Rann and Egzuht. Don’t miss the free pizza buffet and costume contests.
