Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

June 28

10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

School’s out for summer, and you’re invited to play, make and discover at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

Free all day long on Sunday, June 28, the Northside museum invites kids of all ages to kick off summer with art, music and recreation. Enjoy a day filled with family fun inside the museum and right outside in Buhl Community Park.

Weave a web, tumble through grass and morph into a butterfly as you explore the museum’s brand new exhibit, Very Eric Carle, making its world premiere right here in Pittsburgh. Step into the colorful worlds of beloved author and illustrator Eric Carle as you enjoy an immersive play-and-learn joinery through five of his acclaimed books about bugs, animals and nature.

Looking for artistic inspiration? Head into the MAKESHOP to use a variety of materials to create a giant web, get in the spirit of summer by chalking up an endless indoor sidewalk with colorful designs and then try your hand at plein air painting in the Backyard Studio with tips from guest artist Lena Loshonkohl.

Ready to rock? Watch a lively performance by the Soundwaves Steelband, move and groove to your favorite tunes at the Kid City Rockers Dance Party featuring DJ KellyMom and enjoy a musical performance exploring teamwork, creativity and songwriting by Sunburst Rocks.

Itching to get outside? Head to Buhl Community Park to help make a large-scale mural and using a variety of unique tools such as brooms and mops and even sheets of Tyvek! Learn to create texture, depth and rich color fields as you experiment with innovative art making techniques inspired by artist and author Eric Carle.

Need a cool down? Ride a “bikerator” equipped with water cannons, lounge (kiddie) poolside in the park and run, jump and skip through sprinklers. Get refreshed with cool cool water as you walk in and around the museum’s magical misting installation, Cloud Arbor, created by California-based artist Ned Kahn.

Be sure to wear clothes you won’t mind getting wet or feel free to bring a bathing suit. The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s Kick Off to Summer Free Day is sponsored by the Jack Buncher Foundation.
