Benjamin Scheuer performing The Lion.

After seeing The Lion, the acclaimed one-man performance written and performed by the engaging Benjamin Scheuer, we can only say this: hurry and buy your tickets. The show is presented on a striking set with six guitars— many of them Martins and all tuned differently—waiting for Scheuer’s magic as he presents through song a story of his father, the love of family, and life lessons learned. His charm was not lost on the audience the night we attended as the crowd leaped—yes, leaped—to their feet in applause as the 70-minute show ended.

First performed at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2014, The Lion has met with very favorable reviews—most mesmerising musical, says The Huffington Post—and the album, Songs from the Lion, will be released on June 3.

Don’t miss the free songwriting workshop by Scheuer at City Theatre on May 28. While anyone can observe for free, five songwriters will be chosen for the workshop. To be considered, send an audio/video recording of a finished original song, as well as the song’s lyrics to: submissions@citytheatrecompany.org. Selected participants will be notified the week of May 23.

Scheuer is the recipient of the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and his animated videos from The Lion have won several awards.

The show is directed by Sean Daniels who has directed at Manhattan Theatre Club and numerous companies and venues, including the Edinburgh Fringe. The Lion closes the season for City Theatre.
