Sitting in a dark theater as the curtain goes up is typically the final stage in a production’s journey. Ever wonder about the creative process and many steps leading up to opening night?

Boasting an expanded lineup, City Theatre’s Momentum Festival will give audiences a unique behind-the-scenes look at projects in their earliest stages, new plays in development and a sneak peek of its 2018-19 season.

Showcasing local talent alongside innovators from the national theater scene, the free festival promises “cutting-edge drama, hilarious comedy, music-fueled storytelling and a chilling new thriller.”

Events include readings of “The Burdens” by CMU alum Matt Schatz — which is making its world premiere at City Theatre in 2019 — “P.Y.G. or The Mis-Edumacation of Dorian Belle” by Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and “The Haunted” by Claire Keichel.

Local playwrights will read from unproduced works during “In Their Own Voices,” and singer-songwriter Jill Sobule will perform a concert version of her in-progress solo show, “#Fuck7thGrade.”

Additional highlights include a “New Play Speed Dating” event and post-show conversations with the artists.
