Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
July 28
6:30—11 p.m.
Where can you sample edible insects and be transported to the lush jungle right in your own backyard?
It’s been a tropical summer thus far and one terrific way to beat the heat is at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium’s “Summer Safari–Colors of the Jungle” benefit bash.
Don those tropical threads and enjoy four themed areas featuring refreshing cocktails, local restaurants and live entertainment by Hit Play, CJ Mike Mason and Radio Tokyo.
Feeling gastronomically brave? Sure to be a hit is the event’s “pestaurant” boasting bug-themed treats created by Ehrlich Pest Control. On the bold menu will be gourmet edible insect dishes including Moroccan Spiced Crickets, Chocolate Chirp Cookies, Savory Bacon and Cheddar Crickets, Cheddar Meal Worms, Sweet Worm Lollipops and Ant Lollipops.
The custom-designed “restaurant” hopes to raise awareness about the fact that, while pests can be highly destructive, they can also provide a “low-impact, sustainable and nutritious protein alternative.”
Safari-goers will enjoy exclusive access to the new Jungle Odyssey exhibit to encounter animals swimming, digging and climbing. Step into immerse dense forests to meet agile ocelots, fast fossas, cute capybaras, giant anteaters—and even a bobbing pygmy hippo.
