UpPrize—the social innovation challenge created by The Forbes Funds—is back after making its stellar debut last year.

On October 6, NEXTpittsburgh will kick things off to help launch the latest round of UpPrize during a free networking event at AlphaLab Gear. If you were there last year, you know not to miss it. And if you weren’t, we suggest you sign up now before it fills up.

“It was the networking event of the year,” said Ilana Diamond of AlphaLab Gear. GTECH’s Andrew Butcher agreed, saying, “it was like walking into my inbox.”

Open to the public, the free event will feature great food and drinks, and a roomful of entrepreneurs, nonprofits, techies and others with every chance to talk social innovation and network for all you’re worth. (We’ll help make it easy. Promise.)

Register for the networking event now.

On-site childcare will be provided by Whetstone Workgroup and is available for children over the age of 3, at no charge to parents. Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first served basis. To request childcare, send an email to jessica@whetstoneworkgroup.com. Please note: All children must be registered in advance; no walk-in children can be accommodated the day of the event.

Beginning October 1, UpPrize will be accepting innovative solutions to challenges in our community. The social innovation competition is brought to you by The Forbes Funds with challenge partners BNY Mellon and Bridgeway Capital.

There are two challenge areas this year: 1) access to healthy food and 2) innovative technology. Each offers a total award purse of $350,000. This time around, the geographic area has expanded to include all of Southwestern PA.

Applications will be accepted between October 1 and November 30. Nonprofits are strongly encouraged to participate. Startups, established firms, students and government agencies are also eligible to apply. Download the UpPrize information here.

Finalists will be selected by January 2017. An awards ceremony will take place in March 2017.
