Those startups are printing newspapers, but they do it with far fewer reporters who make far less than the top-scale journalists at the Post-Gazette. It would take a lot of these types of smaller, leaner outlets to replace the work that always has been done by large print newspapers. Still, they say they are figuring out a way to pay their bills and keep going.

The day news reporters barely could imagine just four years ago is arriving. There will be more days.

  • Sensi Magazine (SensiMag.com), a free monthly pro-cannabis, lifestyle publication in eight cities nationwide, will be launching in Pittsburgh this fall. Pittsburgh natives Gina Vensel and Matt Raymond are the local publishers. Gina says the magazine will feature food, art and music news along with cannabis education, and Sensi plans to host events around the city for the cannabis community.
  • Emily Bennett, who worked as editor of The Globe, Point Park University’s weekly newspaper, has started as a reporter for the Mon Valley Independent. Co-owner Naz Victoria told me the newspaper still has an opening for another general assignment reporter. Applicants may contact managing editor Stacy Wolford at swolford@yourmvi.com.
  • WESA-FM has posted several openings, including one for a morning radio news editor/producer.
