P3R (Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc.) created the Run For A Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America to inspire runners to MOVE for a greater good, creating a lasting impact on their community and themselves. Each year, DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon participants can choose to raise funds for causes near and dear to their hearts.

Every charity runner makes a difference within the Pittsburgh community through Run for a Reason. Since the program launched in 2009, thousands of runners have raised more than $12.3 million for local and national charities! Hundreds of local, national and global causes have benefited from these funds, but P3R is particularly proud that more than 90% of the funds raised each year directly benefit Pittsburgh-based charities.

“It’s extremely fulfilling for us to see so many people connect their passion with a purpose to help others in our local community,” said P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros. “And, we are helping people to raise money that truly makes a difference in our region.”

This year more than 2,500 charity runners are expected to participate in the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, which includes a marathon, half-marathon, marathon relay, 5K, kids race and pet walk. No matter your age or ability, anyone can connect passion with purpose and run for a reason on race weekend!

“The Run for a Reason Charity Program is an amazing opportunity to give back,” said Sabrina Mitchell, who runs in her mom’s honor while raising funds for American Cancer Society. “Raising money for a charity close to your heart is not only rewarding, but also a relatively simple process. If you’re thinking about running for a reason, I can guarantee you will not regret doing it!”

Charity runners like Sabrina know there’s no better feeling than crossing the finish line and knowing that those miles counted for MORE! If you want to be a part of something greater than yourself and support a meaningful cause close to your heart, there is still time to register as a charity runner for any of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend events.

How It Works
People can choose from 37 official charities to fundraise for in 2019. Each charity sets its own fundraising minimum that, when reached, will earn you a FREE race entry. Visit our CrowdRise page to register for an official charity of your choice.
If you are interested in running for a charity that is not listed as an official charity, please view the contributing charities listed on the CrowdRise page. If you want to fundraise for a contributing charity, you will not receive a free registration and will have to purchase one separately by visiting Race Roster.

“We look forward to seeing how much money can be raised this year from our dedicated runners,” Matamoros said. “It’s a perfect example of how, if we all band together, we can truly make a difference.”
