Looking for an affordable night of fun for the whole family? Don’t miss the Hillman Performing Arts Series, which offers a diverse lineup of shows that are sure to entertain kids and adults of all ages. Hillman Series shows take place at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, which is conveniently located in Fox Chapel on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus, with free parking.
The 2019-2020 series includes seven great shows, including a four-show Main Stage Series in the Hillman Center’s 665-seat Richard E. Rauh Theater and a three-show Black Box Series in the smaller, more intimate Peter J. Kountz Theater. All shows are on Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.
The Main Stage Series features four family-friendly shows that kids are sure to love. It kicks off on Saturday, October 19 with world-renowned mentalist, Wayne Hoffman in his mind-reading and comedy show, Mind Candy. Witness the impossible as Hoffman reads the minds of audience members, demonstrates seemingly psychic phenomenon, predicts the future and travels through time. Mind Candy is a crazy melting pot of mind reading, hilarious laugh-out-loud comedy and unbelievable mysteries that will have you on the edge of your seat! Get a sneak peek of the show here.

On Saturday, December 14, dust off those ugly holiday sweaters as Six Appeal Vocal Band returns to Pittsburgh with its high-octane Ugly Sweater Party, just in time for the holidays! Featuring distinctive acappella arrangements of traditional and original holiday music, this concert will leave you energized for the holiday season! On Saturday, February 15, violinist Tami Lee Hughes will captivate you with her lavish sound and rich artistry in The Legacy Show, a multimedia concert celebrating African American composers. Performed with pianist Byron Burford-Phearse, the show features classical music infused with spirituals, blues, gospel, hip-hop, and jazz, plus poetry and visual media. On Saturday, April 18, the Main Stage Series closes with Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, a troupe that’s re-imagined traditional American circus with a contemporary twist. This unique hybrid of vaudeville, circus, comedy and live original music features an eclectic cast of acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, sideshow marvels and more. On Saturday, September 28, enjoy a solo acoustic performance by Grammy Award-winner Dom Flemons, also known as “The American Songster.” The founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops will perform songs from his 2018 album, Dom Flemons Presents Black Cowboys, as well as his repertoire of American folklore, ballads, and tunes. On Saturday, November 16, join us in the Black Box for an acoustic evening with Ariel Pocock. A captivating jazz pianist, vocalist, and composer, her original compositions and songs draw inspiration from Cuban and Brazilian folk music, the Great American Songbook, modern jazz composers and more. On Saturday, March 14, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the Black Box Series presents Blackwater, whose high-energy brand of Celtic music blends folk, classical and contemporary influences into a unique and dynamic sound. The band’s striking vocal harmonies, intricate fiddle styles, multi-instrumental talent and penchant for compelling rhythms ensure there’s something for every Irish music lover!
