Mascot Skate at Schenley Park Skating Rink: January 14
Hit the ice with some real characters during Citiparks’ popular Mascot Skate. The event allows the whole family to enjoy an afternoon of fun with beloved local mascots, including Kenny the Kennywood Kangaroo, Iceburgh from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steely McBeam from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mascot Skate takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Schenley Park Skating Rink. Admission is $5, $3 for youth 17 and under, and $4 for seniors. Skate rentals and blade sharpening services will also be available.
Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Bash at the Mattress Factory: January 16
Families can honor an American Civil Rights hero during the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Bash at the Mattress Factory. The annual event celebrates the life and visionary spirit of Dr. King with a variety of activities. Visitors can make a self-portrait and read with Sydelle Pearl, create a birthday crown, dance to music, enjoy party snacks, make a magnet and more. As part of a partnership with the Union Project’s 1000 Birds Project, MLK Day Jr. Birthday Bash participants can also make clay birds inscribed with messages on them. The birds will then be returned to the Union Project to be kiln fired.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Bash takes place from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Mattress Factory. The museum’s galleries will be open to visitors during the event. Admission is free for all ages.
Amazing Butterflies at Carnegie Museum of Natural History: January 21-April 23
See the world from a bugs-eye view when the Carnegie Natural of History Museum presents Amazing Butterflies. The maze-like exhibition combines the fun of a playground with interactive learning and engaging activities for the whole family. Kids and adults alike can learn about bugs and their environments as they climb in pupa pods, crawl like a caterpillar through a monarch tunnel or soar down the butterfly zip-line.
Amazing Butterflies begins at 10 a.m. in the R.P. Simmons Family Gallery. The event is included with regular museum admission. Amazing Butterflies will run through April 2017.
Lunar New Year at the JCC Pittsburgh: January 28
The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition kicks off the Lunar New Year, a traditional two-week-long Asian festival, with an afternoon of fun for the whole family. Marvel at incredible cultural performances featuring everything from martial arts to Chinese folk dancing and traditional instruments. There will also be plenty of authentic food, arts and crafts, demonstrations and more.
The Lunar New year kick-off takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the JCC Pittsburgh. The festival will culminate with a parade on February 12 in Squirrel Hill’s commercial district.
Kids Without Borders at Alphabet City: January 29
City of Asylum and Community Blueprint presents Kids Without Borders, a day-long event meant to welcome youth of all different races. Kids and teens can celebrate diversity and connect to one another through fun activities such as face painting, storytelling and dance. For adults, there are resources on navigating the issues facing young people and families today, including sessions on counseling support, legal guidance and how to counter bullying.
Kids Without Borders takes place at the City of Asylum’s Alphabet City venue. The event is free and open to the public. The start time and RSVP information for are forthcoming. Please check back to the event page for more details.
