What’s so cool about manufacturing?
Last Wednesday more than 750 people, from high school students to industry leaders, gathered at Heinz Field to find out as the winners of a student video contest were announced.
“The focus of our video contest was to get young people connected around the concept of what makes manufacturing cool,” said Petra Mitchell, president and CEO of Catalyst Connection, which hosted the event and the video contest. “This contest gave students a ‘hands-on’ experience into the world of manufacturing, showing them how important manufacturing is to nearly everyone, everywhere.”
This year, the annual contest paired 20 manufacturing companies with students from 19 Pittsburgh area middle schools who interviewed employees and went behind the scenes to learn about the manufacturing industry. The contest got more than 46,000 votes online over a five-day period.
Howie Choset, CTO of the Advanced Robotics in Manufacturing (ARM) Institute was the keynote speaker for the evening. With images of “snake robotics” in action, he shared how robotics is impacting the world in many ways, from health care and disaster recovery to advanced manufacturing.
