Check out the new Peregrine Falcon chick
There’s a new chick atop the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning in Oakland. One of four Peregrine Falcon eggs hatched on April 29 at the nesting site. You can watch the birds — which were listed as an endangered species in Pennsylvania in 2019 — on the National Aviary’s Nestcam.
BetRivers Lounge opens at PPG Paints Arena
BetRivers Lounge is now open at PPG Paints Arena on the FedEx level (third floor, section 119). Attendees ages 21 and older who have a BetRivers.com account can watch and wager on Penguins games and other sporting events at the space, which matches the look and feel of the sportsbook lounge at Rivers Casino on the North Shore. The space features a bar, two rows of ticketed bowl seats, a lounge with club chairs, high-definition video screens and streaming odds boards.
EZPZ Gatherings hosts open house in Aspinwall
EZPZ Gatherings, a cheese and charcuterie catering business, will host an open house on May 16 at its new prep kitchen at 230 1st St. in Aspinwall. Owner Sarah Tuthill creates elaborate appetizer spreads, which she calls gathering boards, featuring meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, nuts and crackers. From noon to 3 p.m., patrons can enjoy cheese paired with food from other local purveyors such as La Dorita Dulce de Leche, Maple Street Jam Co., Best Granola and Appalachian Botanical Co.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania is raising awareness about mental health conditions throughout the month of May. The organization’s You Are Not Alone campaign focuses on connecting people to resources and free online support. Before the pandemic, one in five people in the U.S. reported having a mental health condition. These days, the figure is two in five, or even higher. NAMIWalks, the organization’s fundraising event, takes place virtually on Oct. 9, but people are encouraged to coordinate their walk teams now.
See the Faces of Free Expression exhibition Downtown
Faces of Free Expression, a new art installation by the International Free Expression Project, will be on display through July 4 in the street-level windows of the former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette building at 34 Boulevard of the Allies. The exhibition features the faces and stories of people who have fought to express themselves. A grand unveiling will take place at 10 a.m. on May 3 to coincide with World Press Freedom Day.
