Free holiday festivities at Bakery Square
Bakery Square’s newly expanded courtyard is being decked out for the holidays.
Developer Walnut Capital is hosting yuletide activities at 6425 Penn Ave. in Larimer throughout the season, including student carolers from Pittsburgh Public Schools, Steelers and Penguins watch parties, pet-inspired fun and photos with Santa. There will also be a daylong community celebration on Dec. 18 from noon to 6 p.m.
This year, Walnut Capital’s annual resident food drive will expand to BakerySquare, benefitting the East End Cooperative Ministry.
“PITTch” your script
Think your script is good enough for the Silver Screen?
On Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., PITTch, a University of Pittsburgh creative writing initiative, will put out a call for Steel City-inspired short film scripts that are 20 pages or less.
The virtual launch event is free and open to the public, but online registration is required.
Two projects will be selected to be funded in the summer of 2022 as community teaching films, which will allow Pitt students and community members to work alongside seasoned filmmaking professionals and gain valuable on-set experience.
Pros include Greensburg native Sujata Day, an actress, writer and director; and Pitt graduate Kelechi Urama, a writer on the Starz television series “Run the World.”
Jumoke Davis, Pitt’s new director of video production, will serve as the event’s moderator. Davis is a multiple Emmy- and Telly Award-winning sports producer, director, host and reporter.
In 2020, the first PITTch! story initiative garnered more than 70 submissions, which led to four emerging talents pitching their stories to “Tales from the Hood” writer/director Rusty Cundieff and Norm Aladjem, who manages Trevor Noah, host of “The Daily Show.”

Sheetz giving away coffee for Christmaz
Need a pick-me-up? All 638 Sheetz store locations across the Mid-Atlantic are giving customers one free self-serve coffee or Cup’occino every week during December.
