It’s now easier to get in and go at the Waterworks GetGo.
The O’Hara Township location at 1081 Freeport Road is the first Giant Eagle cafe/convenience store to launch checkout-free shopping, which means patrons can skip the line.
Customers can download the free Grabango app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and create an account with their payment and Advantage Card information. Patrons can then enter the GetGo and shop as usual while the system automatically accounts for all selected items via ceiling cameras that detect what they pick up or put back on the shelf. On the way out, they scan the code at the Grabango station and receive a digital receipt via the app. Beer, wine and made-to-order food items are not yet available through Grabango.
“Together, Giant Eagle and Grabango are offering new levels of convenience by solving everyone’s number one frustration — waiting in checkout lines,” says CEO Will Glaser, who founded Grabango in 2016. “Checkout-free convenience has arrived and we’re so proud to be offering it with Giant Eagle and GetGo; they’re a fantastic partner.”
The Grabango platform is the leading provider of checkout-free technology for large-scale store chains. GetGo’s application of this technology — which does not use facial recognition to ensure privacy — is the industry’s first true retrofit of an existing store.
Laura Karet, president and CEO of Giant Eagle, Inc., says the company will roll out more Grabango-powered convenience and grocery stores in the near future.
The company frequently pilots new technology at the Waterworks GetGo and Market District locations since guests in the area have historically embraced and engaged with it in a way that generates helpful feedback. Giant Eagle, which has 70 GetGos and 75 supermarkets in the Pittsburgh area, has been working on this launch with Grabango for more than a year.
