“If you want to veer off the beaten path and see a different side of the Steel City, Pittsburgh’s North Boroughs are a best-kept secret that keeps you close to downtown, and even closer to some of the city’s freshest attractions,” writes Lonely Planet.

North Boroughs? It’s a term that’s new to us but perhaps others in Pittsburgh use it. (We’d love to know. UPDATE, March 1: It’s a common term among residents and now we know. Thank you.)

The North Boroughs, says the travel guide, include Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon and Emsworth.

Turns out the feature was written by Meg St. Esprit McKivigan, a Pittsburgh writer who lives in Bellevue, a fact we later discovered when we posted the article on our Facebook page.

Brimming with Victorian charmers and Craftsman beauties and anchored by the walkable main-street community of Bellevue, these communities are the perfect home base for your Pittsburgh travel adventures, whether you stay in the boroughs or go further afield,” writes Meg for the Lonely Planet.

No argument there, but we were surprised to see they left out several other nearby communities, some that even share the same ZIP code. As the author explained, it doesn’t go by zip code.

In any case,  it’s good to see our neighbors to the north getting some attention.
