Beers, barbecue, pizza and pups are popping up at the SouthSide Works this summer.
In mid-July, the green space between Tunnel Boulevard and South Water Street will open as the Dog Park, a fenced-in, year-round recreation space for dogs. The site will regularly host adoption clinics with local rescue organizations and other canine-centric events.
Levity Brewing Co. will occupy the adjoining permanent kiosk, serving pet owners as well as visitors to the SouthSide Works’ annual Music on the Mon concert series. Based in Indiana, with a taproom in Altoona, this is Levity’s first Pittsburgh location.
“Puppies and cold beer. We keep pinching ourselves because this is going to be the happiest place in the city,” says Luke McKelvy, owner of Levity Brewing. “People in the neighborhood want to relax and connect. Amen. That’s our sweet spot — on top of that, the special events and concerts you can enjoy with local beer and food.”
Over in the property’s revitalized Town Square, Smokin Ghosts BBQ and Slice on Broadway will operate kiosks by August, joining other highly anticipated restaurants and entertainment centers.
Don Garrett, the owner of the spooky food truck, says longtime fans can expect their favorites as well as new additions to the menu, which includes items such as pulled pork mac and cheese, St. Louis-style ribs and street tacos.
Slice on Broadway, a pizza joint with locations in Beechview, Carnegie, Wexford and the East End, will serve a wide variety of slices, rolls and other quick bites.
“Thousands of people who call SouthSide Works their home or workplace now have options for quick and quality grab-and-go lunch options and unique outdoor dining experiences,” says Jonathon Reeser, principal for SomeraRoad, which now owns and operates SouthSide Works. “With the addition of a permanent stage and cafe-style seating, the Town Square will truly be the gathering space it was always intended to be — a welcoming place to have a local bite with friends, enjoy live music and other local entertainment and a spot to work remotely in the open air.”
Over the next few months, SomeraRoad is investing more than $37 million in capital improvements and over $130 million in new development at the riverfront property.
