Robert Glasper

Cabaret at Theater Square

8:30 p.m.

Celebrate National Jazz Appreciation Month with a performance by the Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Robert Glasper. One of today’s leading pianists, Glasper is appearing at Cabaret at Theater Square as part of The Cultural Trust’s year-long programming dedicated to iconic jazz artists.

Born in Houston in 1978, Glasper has released six albums on the legendary American jazz label Blue Note Records. Known for crafting a sound that spans everything from modern jazz hip hop and R&B, to neo-soul, gospel and rock & roll, Glasper won a Grammy for his 2012 release, Black Radio. His most recent album, 2013’s Black Radio 2, features special guests Common, Lalah Hathaway, Norah Jones, Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg and more.

Glasper’s earliest musical influence came from his mother Kim, who sang jazz and blues professionally and took him with her to clubs. Glasper began playing piano at a young age in church, where his mother also sang, and this experience first inspired him to mix church and gospel harmonies with jazz harmonies. He went on to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC, where he met neo-soul musician Bilal Oliver. The pair performed and recorded together, and Glasper soon began to work with a variety of hip hop and soul stars, including Q-Tip, Kanye West, J Dilla, Erykah Badu and Jay-Z. He has also reinterpreted material by rock acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead and David Bowie.

Catch much more live jazz Downtown, with a lineup of established and emerging performers, during Pittsburgh JazzLive International, which takes place June 20-22.
