Looking to spice up your Pride?
Pride Week in Pittsburgh offers more opportunities than ever for celebration, advocacy and awareness, and exploring and supporting Pittsburgh’s LGBT communities. And this year, there is even more to celebrate: In May, Pennsylvania became the latest US state to champion same-sex marriage and Allegheny County married its first same-sex couples. In June, the New York Times‘ Travel section recommended the Burgh as a gay destination worth visiting, and this week, LGBT events and activities are taking center stage.
For those seeking queer events with a more underground, after-hours and edgy vibe, Totally Vers Pride Weekend has you covered. With four parties spanning three days, the first annual event of its kind boasts fun on and off dry land. Conceived as an alternative queer pride weekend to augment the Delta Foundation’s events during 2014 Pride Week, the mini-festival runs June 13th through June 15th at multiple venues. Teaming up to curate your alt-queer itinerary are Honcho, PGH Bro Club, the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force and Sharon Needles.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, June 13th—an apt date for a night headlined by local drag superstar Sharon Needles—at Cruze Bar in the Strip District, where the RuPaul’s Drag Race winner will serve as host and performer. Needles’ signature blend of macabre mayhem, punk rock toughness, silver screen diva and warm charisma will be the perfect mix for working the room and the crowds during Hellhole: A Friday The Thirteenth Gay Pride Nightmare.
Providing the night’s soundtrack will be Pgh Bro Club’s resident DJs Dad Time and Edgar Um, spinning a contagious mix of trash pop, thug hop and queenie house to keep the dance floor crowded until 2 a.m. If you dare, step up to Charm City-based artist Colby Keller’s spanking station. The night will also feature appearances by GoGo Guy Jon Shields and scary surprise guests, artful decor by Thommy Conroy and lighting design by Alexis Icon.
Anchoring the weekend as the main event is Honchothon, on Saturday, June 14th, at Hot Mass, which opened Downtown in 2012. A fundraiser for the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force, Honchothon is bringing internationally acclaimed Berlin DJ duo Discodromo (Giacomo Garavelloni + Giovanni Turco) to the Burgh for a fabulous night of dancing and celebration nourished by the pair’s “roller coaster ride through psychedelic house, techno and disco.” A major fixture on the Berlin club scene, Discodromo regularly appears at Panorama Bar, and hosts their own monthly gay party, CockTail d’Amore. Touring stateside for pride month, Discodromo is appearing at some of the top queer parties across the US.
Bookending the night will be opening and closing sets by Juan Ramos from Berlin, as well as Pittsburgh’s own Aaron Clark (Honcho, Hot Mass, Humanaut) and Edgar Um (Honcho, PGH Bro Club, VIA). Helping to set the scene with visual installations will be Pittsburgh-based artist Kevin Ramser.
What else could be more fitting for the Sunday finale than a yacht party? The cool down crew knows that Sunday is not just for brunch anymore, so grab that sailor cap and sunscreen, and join the river festivities to wrap up the weekend for a booze cruise aboard the Fantasy Yacht. The sunset recovery boat party will feature music and performances by Sfire (Ghostly, Detroit), Ginger Brooks Takahashi (Braddock, PA) and Clark Price (Honcho, PGH) from 7 to 11 p.m. Entry begins at 6 p.m. at the Lockwall One Marina (23rd St & Railroad, next to the Cork Factory Lofts), and the boat returns to dock at 10 p.m.
