This weekend, the Mattress Factory  presents a doubleheader of public programs centered around its current Detroit: Artists in Residence exhibition. Taking her creative practice out into the community, current MF artist Jessica Frelinghuysen and and writer Steve Hughes host Let Me Tell You on March 14th at 8 p.m. Billed as an artist-led pub crawl and story collecting adventure, Frelinghuysen and Hughes will lead attendees to four North Side  pubs, encouraging conversation, interaction, drawing and storytelling. Visiting four bars in four hours, the pair will sketch, take notes and doodle on napkins along the way–and implore you to do the same–creating source materials that will become part of a collective installation displayed at the museum. $5; reservations required.

Return to the Mattress Factory on March 15th at 7 p.m., where Frelinghuysen will perform her ongoing performance piece, Welcoming Committee, as part of the program, Good Tyme Writers Buffet. Frelinghuysen’s work at both events will incorporate a special integrative uniform she wears during her public actions, as well as participatory activities she has designed for museum-goers. Equal parts neighborhood potluck and literary reading, the buffet will showcase work by six writers: Sherrie Flick, Steve Hughes, Joy Katz, Lori Jakiela, Daniel McCloskey and Dave Newman. Readings will explore the concept of neighborhood and Frelinghuysen’s installation, My City is Your City, on view at the MF through May 25. With music by Andrew Edmonds’ Vinyl Showcase. $5 (free with shared dish).
