Carnegie Music Hall
March 26 (sold out)
Whether you were there to experience it or still regret missing the highly anticipated and sold out solo performance by the prolific singer, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Mangum at Carnegie Music Hall in January 2012, all fans of his Athens, Georgia band Neutral Milk Hotel know that their appearance in the Oakland venue this week is a rare act not to miss. Returning to Pittsburgh, Mangum will be joined by his full band, continuing Neutral Milk Hotel’s return to live performing after an extended hiatus, which was kicked off in 2013, including core founding members and multi-instrumentalists, Scott Spillane (horns), Julian Koster (musical saw, banjo, bass) and Jeremy Barnes (drums and percussion). A centerpiece of The Warhol’s Spring 2014 Sound Series, the highly influential group comes to Pittsburgh for its first concert at Carnegie Music Hall to feature the original lineup from their seminal album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, released in 1998 on Merge Records. Leading artistic visionaries who helped form The Elephant 6 Recording Company, a unique collective of like-minded American musicians responsible for creating some of the most significant and authentic independent music of the 1990s, such as The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel has had a profound impact on contemporary music over the past 20 years, stretching beyond its cult following in indie rock and folk. The band’s on-stage energy and diverse instrumentation supports Mangum’s powerful and intimate vocal delivery, distinct guitar style, soaring melodies and lyrical narratives that are akin to magical realism, resulting in a transfixing live music experience.
On tour with Neutral Milk Hotel and opening Wednesday’s concert is fellow Athens, Georgia and Elephant 6 band Elf Power, which have released 12 albums. The psychedelic pop-rock band features Andrew Rieger, Laura Carter, James Huggins and Peter Alvanos. Formed in 1994, Elf Power has released its latest LP, Sunlight On The Moon, in October 2013 on Darla Records/Orange Twin Records. The show is sold out.
