For its 21st installment, the annual JFilm Festival boasts 17 award-winning titles from eight countries, including Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Poland and the US. A signature event run by The Pittsburgh Jewish Film Forum, the unique festival provides the chance for Pittsburgh cinema fans to see many works that would otherwise not be available to local audiences. Featured are leading international films exploring Jewish themes, characters and experiences within a wide range of genres and formats, including comedy, drama, romance, adventure and documentary. Setting up shop at four venues around town, JFilm also includes a vibrant program of guest artists, premieres, parties and a short film competition. JFilm kicks off with a festive opening night gala on March 27th featuring the Pittsburgh premiere of Eytan Fox’s 2013 film, Cupcakes, which follows a tight-knit group of 30-something Israelis who enter an international song competition. The festival wraps with a closing night party featuring the Pittsburgh premiere of It Happened in St. Tropez, Danièle Thompson’s 2013 story of love triangles, sibling rivalry and religious conflict that mixes comedy, chaos and music.

On April 3rd at 6:30 p.m., don’t miss the Pittsburgh premiere of Brave Miss World at Rodef Shalom. Directed by the American producer, director and actress Cecilia Peck, who is the daughter of actor Gregory Peck, the powerful film tells the story of Linor Abargil, who was raped while modeling in Italy just weeks before being crowned Miss World 1998. Following Abargil as she courageously confronts her rapist and works towards empowerment and healing, the 2013 film raises awareness about her experiences and struggles, and encourages women around the world to speak out about their own stories of rape. Abargil, who is now an international activist and advocate for victims of sexual violence, will speak following the April 3rd screening. The special event, which includes a pre-show VIP reception, is hosted by Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh and Z Brand Group.

JFilm’s opening night gala is known to sell out, so grab tickets now. View a complete JFilm schedule.
