Leigh White has the perfect job for a lifelong Pittsburgher who passionately loves her city: vice president of marketing and communications for the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. An avid music fan, Leigh experienced the highlight of her summer performing with her band at the Three Rivers Arts Festival.
So what is she up to this week?
Monday, September 1
Today, I am planning to do anything but Labor! I’m going to get up nice and early and take my bike to the Panhandle Trail for a good, long bike ride. My goal today is to start in Collier and make it to the Montour Trail Connection, which round trip should make for a gorgeous 16-mile ride. Following that, I’ll be hungry and I’ll head to my favorite breakfast spot, Bob’s Diner in Carnegie–for a hearty omelet and a big cup of coffee.
Later in the day, I plan to meet up with my mother, and we’ll likely take in a movie. I’m hoping I can convince her to catch a 30th anniversary showing of Ghostbusters.
Tuesday, September 2
Getting back into the swing of the work week, I’ll start today off with a staff meeting at the PDP Offices, where everyone will share what they are currently working on. We’re already well underway with holiday season planning for Downtown, and this will only continue to ramp up in the coming weeks.
I’m planning to meet a friend who works Downtown today for a quick lunch from one of my favorite spots, Bluebird Kitchen. In addition to the tasty sandwiches and salads, I’m a sucker for the macaroons, particularly when they have creative flavors like lavender and salted caramel. We’ll take our lunches to-go and hope to grab a table in Market Square. After lunch, I plan to pop into one of my favorite Downtown shopping spots–Boutique la Passarelle, which is having their end of summer sale. I always find beautiful, unique items there.
End of the work day will find me heading to the Downtown Y, to hopefully burn off the macaroon in a Spin Class–I just took my first Spin Class last week and I can’t wait to get back again. I also can’t believe it took me this long to try spinning!
Wednesday, September 3
I have several interesting meetings today about upcoming projects that should be engaging and bring some new, innovative events to Downtown Pittsburgh. One of the things I love best about my job is that every day is different and frequently filled with people who have great visions for our city.
Wednesday evening I’m attending the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council’s “Unleashed” Artist Party and Dog Fashion Show at the New Hazlett Theater. I’m a sucker for dogs in costume!
Thursday, September 4
At lunchtime, I will be heading to the Market Square Farmer’s Market, which is truly one of my favorite weekly happenings Downtown. I love the diversity of produce, baked goods, cheeses, wine, hummus and so much more that our market offers! I’ll also be sure to take in a bit of Joel Lindsay, who will be performing.
In the evening, I plan to finally get to Gus’s in Lawrenceville for DarkWave Night. I’m nothing if not a child of the ’80s and I hear this is a pretty great night of my favorite music and dancing.
Friday, September 5
I’m very much looking forward to the media preview event that the Heinz History Center is hosting this morning for the new Heinz Exhibition. In particular, the exhibit promises a “larger-than-life Heinz ketchup bottle comprised of 300 individual bottles.”
Following that, I’m meeting a good friend and colleague at the Warhol Café for lunch; he works there so it’s convenient.
Saturday, September 6
I’ve been in a book club with a group of my girlfriends for over 10 years and this morning, we are doing something we’ve never done before–meeting the author of our chosen book. Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont is hosting Lori Rader Day, author of the new book, The Black Hour. After the book reading and signing, we plan to head across the street to the Oakmont Bakery for a little lunch and I am certain I will leave with a few cupcakes, including my favorite–The Elvis in Oakmont–a yellow batter cake amped up with banana mousse filling smothered with peanut butter frosting and white chocolate ganache. It’s pretty much all of my favorite things rolled into one fantastic cupcake.
