Moderate incomes, major needs

Working with single mothers isn’t a new concept for HFLA, but the new grant fund “makes our service much more widely available,” she says. Money from the fund has gone out to people of all different faiths and economic circumstances.

HFLA doesn’t work with extremely low-income populations that can’t afford to pay off an interest-free loan. But all too often, people of moderate income have great needs. According to MarketWatch, today about half of all Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

“We work with people across the spectrum of lower to lower-middle to middle class. It’s very expensive to live nowadays, so even people who are making $100,000 have expenses that they can’t afford,” Lubowsky says. “There are times in everybody’s life when we need more money than we have.”
