The popular travel website, which provides reviews of travel-related content, includes interactive travel forums and was an early adopter of user-generated content, has just released its Travelers’ Choice “Destinations on the Rise for 2016— United States” list, and Pittsburgh has landed a Number 8 spot on the impressive roster.

The global travel site’s “Destinations on the Rise” awards go to destinations that “have seen the greatest increase in positive feedback and interest from the TripAdvisor community, year-over-year.” The Travelers’ Choice winners are among TripAdvisor’s top one percent—”truly the best of the best.”

In describing Pittsburgh, TripAdvisor writes:

“Steel and coal may have built this city, and you’ll see the names Mellon and Carnegie on an awful lot of things, but Pittsburgh has come a long way from its gritty, industrial past. The Waterfront Complex, a collection of shops, restaurants, a movie theatre and even a water park, was recently built on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel Works, and two new professional sports stadiums have opened downtown in just the past two years. However, history buffs will delight in a visit to sites like the Point State Park (home of the Fort Pitt Museum) and the Duquesne Incline, where you can ride an antique cable car and browse displays about this unique form of transportation. If you don’t mind the extra drive, a trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is a must.”

The list is accompanied by an extensive slide show of images submitted by visitors to Pittsburgh, featuring our fair city’s dramatic topography, skyline views, world-class arts and cultural destinations, urban parks, landmark bridges and architecture, authentic neighborhoods, restaurants and more.

“Our well-traveled community has helped us identify the destinations around the world that are gaining in interest and popularity,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “We hope these destinations inspire those planning their travel for 2016 to book trips to these locales that feature excellent hotels, restaurants and attractions, and also provide a great vacation value.”

Destinations joining Pittsburgh on the 2016 list include Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, California and Jackson, Wyoming. Not bad company.
